Más de una hora de espera en lo que resultó ser el pase de prensa con mayor expectación del 64 Festival de San Sebastián no solo justificó el tiempo invertido, sino también la verborrea agasajadora posterior de la prensa aquí concentrada. Uno ya no sabe ni con qué vara medir lo que la crítica comparte en redes sociales. Comparando películas ya presentadas y comentadas con la proyectada ayer, uno diría que es una obra más aupada a la condición de ‘palabra de dios’ o de ‘cine de posteridad’, y molesta. Molesta por muchas razones, pero principalmente porque, cuando realmente es así, los lectores ya no dan opción a la inocente creencia. Pero esta vez sí, esta vez cualquier palabra manida y neciamente vertida por los innumerables pseudocríticos del Festival, está justificada. Como también está justificado el nombre que denomina la sección que presentaba la película, ‘Perlas’, siempre magnífica, en esta ocasión con mayor razón.
Basada en el relato corto ‘Story of your life’, ‘La Llegada’ es una de las mejores películas de ciencia ficción de los últimos años, minimalista en cuanto al tratamiento temático y la puesta en escena. Podríamos decir que sigue la estela sobria marcada por algunas de las joyas del género en lo que va de siglo, como ‘Ex Machina’ o ‘Coherence’, sin olvidar odiseas espaciales como ‘Moon’ o ‘Gravity’. La nueva cinta del director canadiense Denis Villeneuve no busca parecerse a nada aunque, como toda propuesta centrada en extraterrestres, sea de inevitable referencialidad. La comunicación con seres de vida extraterrestres tiene en ‘La llegada’ su clímax, su perfección formal, su expresión más perfeccionista y pura. No, la película no tiene acción, tiene comunicación y voluntad de llegar con honestidad a un punto de no retorno, a un punto sin límites.
Villeneuve desdibuja conceptualmente el principio y el fin, no solo de sus propios personajes y moldes narrativos, sino del género y de los convencionalismos que a una magnitud comercial se le presuponen. No es una propuesta ni mucho menos nueva u original, pero hay detalles que, analizando su repercusión en el resultado global, sitúan a ‘La llegada’ como una propuesta de cine grande. Grandeza en cuanto a personalidad y valentía, porque no hay que olvidar que se trata de un producto comercial, detalle que nunca ha sido un problema para que el director conserve estilo. A pesar de haber más signos autorales en propuestas como ‘Incendies’ o ‘Enemy’ que en ‘Prisioneros’ o ‘Sicario’, si hay una evidencia en su cine es la personalidad, y con ‘La llegada’ queda consagrada.
Es inevitable recurrir a la inmersión experiencial de Malick, la maestría pionera de Kubrick o incluso la propia libertad creativa de Villeneuve como ‘adaptador’ de relatos. Nombres grandes para cine coloso, posiblemente magnificado por el hecho incuestionable de que nos encontramos en época de déficit artístico y autoral. Paradójicamente, una de las causas, la sobreexplotación de los remakes, nos traerá una de las películas más esperadas y estimulantes del próximo año: Blade Runner 2. Que Villeneuve se haya aproximado a la ciencia ficción con ‘La llegada’, eleva la expectación generada por un remake que dirigirá él y protagonizarán Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling y Jared Leto.
Hay un detalle que marca toda la película que merecería la pena comentar para cerrar un ciclo sin principio ni final, para escuchar el cantar de un pájaro o sentir la incetidumbre de lo desconodido, pero lamentablemente podría ser considerado spoiler, y lo último que quiero es privaros de la magnitud de tal película, de la posteridad de tal obra, del placer de tal contacto con seres extraterrestres.
